The Old Square – Massif Carnic– La 'Zeus' Peak – Piatra Despicata– Piatra Corbului – La 'Calut'– The Brazi Lake – The Old Square Discovery Walk Duration on foot: 5 hours (moderate walking) Trail Marking:
From The Old Square, down the road, 150 m away follow the countryside road that turn left. Just in front of you will lie the pinewoods covered Carnic Mountain. Inside this mountain are maybe the most impressive Roman galleries in Europe forming a labirinth that guides you through the 2000 years old history of Rosia Montana. Unfortunately these galleries are not open for the public and morover are facing distruction because of the planned mining project. To the right of Carnic Mountain there used to be another representative massif - Cetate, on top of which there was a Roman fortification that was destroied in the 70's when the state mine operation begun. The limit between Carnic and Cetate is called La 'Zeus'. From here a great panaroma of Rosia Montana is reveiled. Following the road to left, you will see on the other side of the two mountains the beautiful Valley of Corna. But the Carnic Mountain has some more wonders to show you - Piatra Despicata and Piatra Corbului. Piatra Despicata is a protected are in Rosia Montana. The history of this stone is not known yet, not even geologically, as we don't know the way it appeard on the Carnic Massif. It has a different composition compared to the other rocks of the massif. The only place where you can find the same kind of rock is the Rotund Peak, on the other side of valley. From Piatra Despicata you go up on the right; on the left you can see parts of Roman works and on the right Corna Valley with Corna Lake . Going further you can see Piatra Corbului, another natural monument. The name of this monument derives from its form, which is a raven head. (more)
From here you take right to 'Calut', which is a rock in the middle of Carnic Massif. It has a wood cross on it, a sign of miners' religiosity. From here you have to go back to the countryside and go straight ahead, around the Carnic untill you enter into the woods. When finding the crossroad, follow the road to the Brazi Lake. At a certain time you will find a halting place. You go on to the right untill you will see the lake. From here continue to go down the road among the houses of the village (there will be little roads on the left and on the right but you must keep the main road). Then you will see a bigger crossroad where you have to turn right to the Great Lake. Continue climbing up the hill, following the path for another 15-20'.
